Bowfisher's,
Did you know that as of Sept.1, 2006 you will be able to bowfish for catfish!
Look in your 2006-2007 TPW Outdoor Annual book, page 33, next to bottom of page.
Lawful Archery Equipment: Includes longbow, recurved bow, compound bow and crossbow. May be used to take NONGAME fish, channel catfish, blue catfish and flathead catfish only.
You do have to follow length and bag limits, same a fishing.
I would like to thank Mark Malfa for his help in getting this passed. www.bigfishbowfishingtexas.com

For anyone who wants to go bowfishing with a great guide, I have met Mark and spoke with many of his past clients and they have nothing but A+ to say. Of course, I wish he would post more of his photos to our Bowfishing Forum, but last time I talked to him (SCI Austin Banquet) he didn't have easy access to a high-speed internet connection. When he does get access, you will be amazed at some of the pictures of alligator gar he has brought in. Until then, check out his website or Guide Post at http://texashuntfish.com/findaguide/index.cfm?fuseaction=detailedview&guideid=234

Im the same way i have been bowfishing for years on whitney and the brazos and see very few catfish, i dont disagree with it though because you still have a limit and if you can catch them on a trotline why shouldnt you be able to shoot them. I have seen alot of people kill fish on trotlines. I will for sure shoot a catfish if i see it.

I have been bow fishing for quite a few years and have seen hundreds of catfish. Since the law changed last September we have stuck a lot of them. If you can find some clear water and a sandy bank, the cats will go up in the shallows to feed at night. They are pretty easy to hit because they don't seem very skiddish. We have shot them up to about eight pounds on Lake Fork. The key is to finding clear water because they always seem ot be sitting on the bottom.

I'm indifferent on whether this regulation stays lawful, but I will say the guys who testified last year, saying they bowfish all the time and hardly ever see catfish are full of BS. They were just saying this to make the parks and wildlife commission think the bowfishing won't have much effect on catfish populations. I've been bowfishing once this year on whitney and the vast majority of fish that were shot were channel cats.

I say no problem with it as long as the normal limits stay inplace and now there is a good fish you can shoot and eat.

Who wants to take me bowfishing?!?! HaHa I was told this summer that I was gonna get to go on the brazos, so I went and bought a bow and everything and the deal fell through. So now i have the equipment but no where or no means of doing it. I live in Lubbock so any hint of a river is like 250 miles away. So, if anybody knows of a resonable guide or anything let me know. Im a college student so I dont have an incredible amount of money to spend. Thanks, Brice.

We were SO dissapointed when they closed Catfish as of Sept 1 2008. Before it ended, I had the pure pleasure of taking a 25 pound yellow cat. What a fight! It was awesome and right in my front yard of the Guadalupe! THis was the record for the Guadalupe River.
BTW, now they are trying to take the Alligator gar and the commissioners meeting on this is tomorrow March 26, 2009 at the TPWD headquarters located on Smith School Rd. I thinks it's 4200. Anyway, it's inthe main building the first room to the right when you walk in if you can join us at 9 AM.
A Family that Hunts together, stays together.
