I hunted ducks yesterday, and had an excellent opportunity to work with my Chesapeak Bay Retreiver, Laverne, on crippled/wounded ducks. As most of you know, wounded ducks will dive on a dog that swims out to retrieve. This can cause confusion with a dog, and experience is the best way I have found to teach a dog how to respond.
Laverne had the opportunity on three ducks yesterday, the first of which dove on her repeatedly. Laverne would tread water in a circle looking for the duck, and invariably the duck would pop up some 10 to 15 feet away. I stayed the course and gave her hand signals and the "over" or "back" commands, depending on the situation. The first duck took her about 4 tries before she caught it, but only one try on the second, and the third she pursued to the bank, and caught on dry land.
I am pretty sure she knows what to do now. She worked hard yesterday, picking up some 20 ducks in flurries of activity.
Attached is a picture of me with Laverne after the hunt.

Nice! Nothing can beat experience for the dog, which is why I am lamenting the poor quail season ahead and the limited experience it will allow my pup this year . . .

It is fun to watch dogs learn. A dog with drive is really something that inspires me when I hunt. My bitch Laverne has so much drive and heart, and she is such an athlete.

Cool pics!!hey ive got a question, i had a registered chessie male that was superb on waterfowl but not that great on pheasants and quail. Seemed like i was always tripping on him. Was it just him or are most chessies mainly duck and goose dogs. Also, he got very aggresive with new people in his backyard. While hunting it was like "nuetral ground" and had no problems but really, really thought he would bite someone in the backyard. He was the only chessie ive been around as they are not common around here. Also, with the oily hair, when i would put frontline on him to control fleas and ticks, he would develop a rash. I gave him to a friend that lives in the country mainly because i didnt want an aggresive dog.

My Chessie is in no way aggressive. She is very good natured, and very good around other dogs and children. She is very protective of me and my family, and will automatically get between me and another dog or animal when we go out hunting. She is also good at ground hunting, and naturally quarters between 20 and 30 yards ahead of me.
Chessies are territorial, that is because they were bred for "market hunters" back in the early 1800's. Market hunters were professional waterfowl hunters, and the chessies were bred to retrieve ducks all day long, and then gaurd the hunters boat and equipment when the hunters went to town to sell their birds.
I have been very pleased with Laverne over the past two years, and plan on breeding her this year so that I will have access to her bloodline down the road.
Keep yer eyes peeled!

Well, we hunted ducks this morning, and had a moderate WSW wind that pushed our birds out quickly after they "splashed down". This caused 4 birds to get pretty far onto the opposite bank. Once we finished hunting, I sent Laverne on 4 really long blind retreives, and I am proud to report that she successfully brought all 4 birds back with relative ease. I say relative because there were some moments where she seemed confused about 3/4 of the way out.
Keep yer eyes peeled!

I spent Friday, Saturday and Sunday (Jan 26-28) down at the lease to really close out the duck season for '07. All of my young hunting buddies punked out on me, and I had to spend the weekend hunting alone with nobody but Laverne to keep me company in the blind.

The wind was out of the SW Saturday morning, which is coming from behing my right shoulder in this particular blind. A large group of teal worked my spread early, and I got a double on the first pass. One landed on the opposite bank, which is probably close to 100 yards out. I got the opportunity to work Laverne on multiple retrieves after seeing both birds fall.....

It was not easy to keep her on task with this teal. It is very tempting for her to abandon the bird in hand to go after the one that just splashed.
