This is the first deer I have taken during the 2006 season. He was on the "hit list" as a cull, being 3.5-4.5yrs old, narrow and way behind the curve as far as the genetics go on this low fenced ranch in Wichita County, Texas.
We had lost all hope of getting an afternoon hunt in after a severe thunderstorm had passed through with a cold front. I was sitting on the porch of the barn glassing the wheat field right after the rain and saw this buck and a couple of others slowly start moving into the field. Water was standing everywhere including a one foot wide stream of run-off water running through the ground blind! We had a friend drop us off at the bind with less than 30 minutes of daylight left. 5 minutes later this buck came back out of the brush and jumped the fence into the field.
My arrow didn't penetrate well at all on the shot. Upon gutting this fat as a tick buck we discovered that the broadhead had clipped the underside of his backbone. When we reviewed the video we were surprised at how much this buck dropped before impact. The shot was at 20yds and he was trying his best to duck the arrow but caught it in both lungs and expires on camera within 100yds.
