I have 5 redbones, one is a U.K.C. GrandChampion.  I try to hunt 4 or 5 nights a week.  We have a blast doing it.  We don't always kill the coons that we tree unless I know someone who wants to eat one!  I am running out of places to hunt that are safe for my dogs. (too close to highways)

My grandfather used to take my brothers and cousins out all the time coonhunting and on horse back.  Chasing after the dogs was a lot of fun!!!  We hunted in East Texas but like you mentioned pretty much ran out of places to go.  I remember at least two times were dogs ran across the highway and got hit by a car.

I've never had one hit by a car yet, but I have been extra careful.  Good dogs are expensive and I have some of the best money "can't buy".  Check out some of the prices of coonhounds at coondawgs.com.  I have several hundred acre tracts I can hunt.  I just wish I knew of more people in E.Texas that hunted.

Where at in E.Texas , haven't hunted in a few years but still have access  to a couple of young hounds. Land to hunt on is getting harder and harder to find  on the east side of Houston.

I have walked many many miles coon hunting with Jerry's (high school hunting bud) hounds.  I sure do miss those days.   Once after fishing all day, we both had dates for that night.  It was a good coon hunting night, so we each called our dates and made up a lie to cancel, so we could go hunting.

In high school, I trapped coon in a pecan orchard, they were health and fat.   Mr. Tillman an old blackman of 80+, squirrel hunted the orchard and was willing to skin the coons to have the meat.  Mr. Tillman was a very old and kind gentleman and I could not let him skin the coon for me.  I would skin and wash them, place each into a plastic bag in the freezer at the barn.  He would come every few days and take them home.

I'll never forget the first time I had them bagged in the freezer, he called me over and said "Mr. Bowman ( I was only in my late teens), Mr. Bowman, if you will leave one foots on a coon, there is not a blackman around that will turn you down.  I know you would never do it, but there is a lot of white folks that would give a dog to a blackman, just for the heck of it.  But, if you will leave one foots on it, anyone will take it, they can sezee that it's a coon."

I kept him in coons, but I could not force myself to leave a foot on them.  I respected Mr. Tillman to much and it just didn't seem right for me to not completely clean and package the coons for him.

Mr. Tillman brought his .22 to my Dad one day.  Mr. Tillman could no longer hit a squirrel with the gun.  Dad asked him to leave it and he would take a look at it.  He left it and I remember my Dad, picking up the gun and it was soooo loose.  The stock was loose and the scope was loose, that old gun would move around in three locations.  Dad tightened it up and sighted it in, then called Mr. Tillman to pick it up.  When Mr. Tillman picked it up, Dad had him shoot it out back.  Mr. Tillman was so appreciative that he had tears in his eyes, he would be able to continue to shoot squirrel.

Good stuff. I knew a black lady ( Mrs. Hightower) that took raccoons and roasted them in the oven with sweet potatoes. She always let me hunt on her land in South Carolina, and all she asked for was a raccoon if I killed it, and the liver of any deer that I killed.

She would fry that liver up with onions.

Keep yer eyes peeled!

This is a secondhand story, but some my find it funny. When I was young we all coon hunted, the one older man that took us hunting had what was called a coon beam.It was alot brighter than the carbide lamps we all had. One night a hellicopter fellover the group, the old man said watch this and hit the hellicopter with the coon light, the helo made a wide turn and lit the whole bottom up with light everyone ran light quail. That was not tried again. I know the pilot had a good laugh.

My sister kept the old kerosene lantern my dad use to carry coon hunting as a boy.  He said that they would save the flashlight batteries till they needed to see up a tree.

I have played with the carbide head lights, but I used the battery powered one.

My hunting bud, Jerry, can make the coon "death squawl".  When there was a tree full of coons, he would squawl, it would make the hair stand on the back of your neck and the coons would rain down out of the tree.  They thought the dogs already had one and the other would jump and run.  It is the dangest thing to see.

I am from Big Sandy.  Yes we leave a foot on the carcass too!  Sometimes I even hunt without taking a gun.  If a coon hasn't run too far, or is young, or real scared you can squall them out of a tree, and the race is on again.  I just enjoy seeing my dogs do what they where originally bred for.  You get plenty of exercise too!  I have a tracking system (collars) on my dog that has a range of around 5 miles here in rolling terrain.  I have turned it on before looking for my dogs and have not been able to locate them.  The average from strike to tree is probably around 3/4 of a mile though.  However from late Jan. to early Mar.  the coon go through a rut just like deer and the boar coons will run forever.  It makes for some long and interesting nights.  You find out real quick what kind of grit your dogs have LOL!

I used to live trap them to clear them from around our house.   Most nights I had all three of my live traps full.   I would take them and drop them off a few miles away.  Finally I figure it was like pulling in a bucket of water from one side of the boat and dumping it out at the other side.   As soon as I go rid of one another would move in.

Plus every once in awhile I would trap a skunk.  So after about thirty coons, four or five skunks and half a dozen cats trapped in a month I quit.

I love spotlighting them in the trees.  We see hundreds as we drive through our deer lease and is easy to kill a bunch.  During the summer we will go down there and shoot a bunch of them.  We never have used dogs no need to down here really.

We went turkey hunting wednesday morning and could not get the 2-3 toms that were taling back to us to come in. so after sitting in place till 9 or so, we decided to go to them and then couldn't get em talkin again so we wandered up and downt he creek we hunted by and saw a big old coon across the creek and decided that he didnt need to keep living. 3 1/2" 4 shot does wonders for coons.

Where are you located? It just so happens a friend of mine has a litter of black and tan pups that were born around Easter weekend.  They should be reasonablly cheap and ready to go.  The female is a pretty nice hound according to him. (never seen her hunt)  I am expecting a litter of redbone pups any day now.  They will carry some of the top bloodlines in the county and will also be reasonablly priced.  The sire is a Grand Champion, and is currently being campaigned in the hunts.  This is the second breeding, the first pups are about 9 months old.  I kept 2 and they are doing great.  I have a report that one is already treeing but not accurate yet.  These pups, the redbones and black and tans are located in east texas around Gilmer. If interested just respond. I am on this thread all the time.

I was raised in a coon hunting family. I raised dogs and hunted many years. I lived in Leon County which is in the west part of east Texas. I have owned and hunted just about all of the breeds of hounds, my favorite was either Bluetick or treeing walkers. I have hunted competition hunts in 4 states. I have hunted many nights and owned some pretty good dogs, I never hunted for there hides. I miss hunting with dogs, I had to sell due to that part of the state breaking up larger tracs of land and there are houses everywhere where we hunted. After we were shot at several times it was over for coon hunting that area. I have since moved to Concho county, I dont know if there are trees big enough for a dog to tree a coon in or not?

There's nothing like seeing your well-bred dogs get excited in a coonchase. Gotta love it.
