HELP

I recently aquired a really great Deutsch Drahthaar, and don't have a freaking clue what to do with him. My ex-significant other and I were given him together but broke up just before we got him, and in spite of my advice, he got him anyway. Of course, I'm the dog person, and he gave up on him after 3 weeks.

So here I am, a professional obedience trainer and very experienced terrier person, with an awesome dog that I don't know what to do with. I got him from a friend that hunted him with a hawk the first year (who I will be visiting soon so I can find out what the dog already knows), so he has some experience on both pheasant and fur, which is great with me. I prefer duck hunting but would love to do as much as possible with him. I have never hunted any birds other than waterfowl, and have always had a trained dog of someone else's that did the retrieving (or the boyfriend haha). At this rate, he's going to end up being just a giant terrier, which is fine, but I'd like the bird dog to come out in him in spite of my idiocy :)

So long post longer... is there anyone in the metroplex (I'm south, in Johnson County, but will drive!!) area that might want to give me some insight, maybe evaluate the dog, give me a starting point? I'm too impatient for books, I guess that comes from working with dogs for all these years. I learn by doing. I never have had to train the terriers to go to ground or the ridgeback to lurch, they just do what they do.  I'm glad to help do some obedience work on your dogs (assist, I wouldn't want to screw anyone's hunting dogs up with my good manners training haha!). Any long post advice will be wasted on me. I know there are a LOT of great and experienced trainers on here, but putting text in front of me will be a waste of your good advice and time. I need hands on. Feel free to e-mail me private. Thanks a ton!!

Wendy

I Wendy, you may want to give brushycreekretrievers.com a call.  His name is Tim Marshall.  He had my lab for 6 months, does great work and knows lots of folks.  I don't think he can specifically meet your needs but I feel he can point you in the right direction.

Check out the Lone Star chapter of NAVHDA and their website for contact info on other versatile breed owners you can meet up with and train/hunt.  They test and train at the Spanish Oak Hunt Club, which is south of you, but there are members all over the state you can reach out to for more help.  Also you can find excellent advice on versatiledogs.com's forums (which are searchable).  Find some folks in the VDD testing system who can help out as well.  DDs are awesome dogs that train very easily -- the breeding system is heavily regulated and cranks out tremedous dogs.  You can have a fantastic upland/waterfowl/fur dog even with just some moderate training efforts!
