TPWD Cancels Public Hunts Along Coast, In East Texas

AUSTIN, Texas — Due to the imminent landfall of Hurricane Ike the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department has canceled public hunting activities along the projected path of the storm.

The teal hunts by Annual Public Hunting Permit and Regular Permit on opening weekend, Sept. 13-14, have been canceled on the following areas: Guadalupe Delta Wildlife Management Area (Mission Lake Unit 720, Guadalupe River Unit 734 and Hynes Bay Unit 724), Mad Island WMA, Justin Hurst WMA and J.D. Murphree WMA.

All public hunting activities by Annual Public Hunting Permit scheduled after noon Sept. 11, until further notice on Moore Plantation WMA Unit 902, Bannister WMA Unit 903, Sam Houston National Forest WMA Unit 905, and Alabama Creek WMA Unit 904.

The following special drawing hunts have been canceled:

The special permit archery alligator hunt (AAL) scheduled for Sept. 12-14 on the J.D. Murphree WMA, Unit 783;

The special permit general alligator hunt (ALE) scheduled for Sept. 11-12 on the J.D. Murphree WMA Unit 783;

The following public hunting activities have been rescheduled:

The drawn special permit youth alligator hunt (YAL) scheduled for Sept. 13-14 on the Sea Rim State Park, Unit 1055, will be rescheduled for Sept. 20-21;

The drawn special permit general alligator hunt (ALE) scheduled for Sept. 12-14 on the Guadalupe Delta WMA, Unit 720, will be rescheduled for Sept. 19-21;

The drawn special permit general alligator hunt (ALE) scheduled for Sept. 12-14 on the Mad Island WMA, Unit 729, will be rescheduled for Sept. 19-21.

Efforts are being made to notify selected hunters in special drawing hunts.

Persons who have purchased a Mentored Hunting Permit and have completed the requirements of the Mentored Hunting Workshop on the Justin Hurst WMA are authorized to hunt dove on the Little Ridge and Tall Grass pastures on Sept. 20.

There will be an alligator hunt on the J.D. Murphree WMA on Sept. 27-28. The bag limit is one alligator per person and participation is limited to hunters designated by the Operation Game Thief Committee.
