Hello,

I am new to this forum and fairly new to hunting. I tried hog hunting last year with no luck. This year i have been slaying ducks. I havent tried hog hunting yet because i have a problem. I have a feeder, spins twice a day. have a trap with a push in door. and i have 2 cameras on the feeder. This equipment has been on my land for about 2 months now, and i dont have a single picture of a hog!?! Under any other sercumstance i would just give up and say there arnt hogs there. The problem with that is there is a pond about 20ft away with the shore line dimolished by hogs on what looks like a nightly basis. 2nd. there will be 1 acer areas of land completly rooted and these are showing up about every week, all in sight distance of the feeder and pond. What is going on here!? how do i get them to move 20ft.? Oh yea, plus, i have personally seen hogs runingacross our pasture, from the area with the pond a feeder, and I got some monsters in there! Why wont they move 20ft.?? I have gotten 1 picture on my trail cam, it was of 1 single crow on the ground. I dont think they are eating all of the corn, cause it was just the one picture. Any suggestions?

Spend time out there with a spot light. I bet you will see them eating all of your corn. Then plan your attack.

From your post above, the cameras are watching inside the trap. The pigs are going inside the trap for whatever reason. Are you leving the swing door open? Brace it open and leave it open for the next month. Remember, pigs are one step below the intelligence of those dolphin at Seaworld.

Like Johnny said above, get a 1M candlepower 12v spotlight at Walmart for $10, sit quietly at between 100 & 200 yards in the comfort of your truck. Every 15 minutes put the spotlight on the pond and feeder and you will probably see the hogs if they are there.

Also, consider moving one of the cameras out of the trap, put it on a tree facing the pond where the hog tracks are and put out some corn 10 feet in front of the camera. Again, you will probably catch some hogs on film.

Don't forget to post the photos so we can see the fruit of your labor.

What kind of trap do you have?  There are lots of reasons why hogs do not enter some traps.  Is there anyway you could post a picture of your setup?

I think you answered your own question on why they won't come into your feeder.  You said they are rooting up patches of land.  That means they are eating the tubers that are growing naturally.  Hogs aren't selective eaters and will eat what's easily available.  When there's another food source, they won't come into your feeder.  They will always go to the pond to drink and wallow so that's why you will always see sign there.

Wait until a couple hard freezes kill off the browse and they'll start coming to your feeder because it'll be the only food source.  Or move your trap to the pond where you know they have been frequenting.

I agree with Boom-Boom.  Keep putting the bait out, they will come to it evenutally.  You might "sweeten" the deal by putting out sour corn or some type of comercial hog bait that has a scent to it that will lure them in.  Hogwild works great but you can also use sour wheat.  You can also pour sour milk and old beer over the corn to give it a smell only a hog could love.  Good luck.

HAPPY

You have been given a lot of good advice here.  I was wondering, why you wouldn't try moving the trap?

As for feed... I get a 50lb bag of sweet feed/all stock from the local feed store for about $7.  Its the same price a bag of hogwild but 10x the amount.  I put about a third of it around the feeder and mix the rest with corn in the feeder.  No problems yet --- as I knock on wood.

I have prove it works...plenty of pics and two monsters taken last month.

Just do not give up.  I went 2 weekends without seeing any pigs, but knew they where still out there.  Enough of the local farmers made sure to advise me they were seeing while fixing some of the fences torn up by the hogs.

Good Luck and God Bless...

Leonard

Thanks for the advice! I am planing on going out there saturday and i will get some pictures of the area and setup i got. I will also take some pics of the pond, and reference pics of the distance. I have used the hogwild before, and i guess it worked, i put it in a bucket with corn and i never saw the bucket again! I also wanted to ask if anyone has heard of pigs coming into the smell of fresh dirt? We dug holes for fence posts with a tractor atatchment and every hole was dug out the next day.... should i dig some holes around my feeder and fill them with the sour corn???

The sour corn will definitely not hurt your chances.

one thing that works for me is to get a bag of "cake" or "range cubes" from the feed store and put some of it in a bucket then soak it in water for a while. it will soak up the water and expand and stink. fast. especially if you leave it in the sun

if you want to go a cheap way get a little corn and mix dry koolaid with it and get some post-hole diggers and dig out about a foot deep and lightly cover it with dirt they will be all over it. I have done it for the last month and killed about 8 hogs in that time
