BIRDS

I was wondering if anyone has hunted waterfowl on Richland Creek WMA? I recently moved to DFW and am looking for a good place to duck hunt within 2 hours or so. I am especially interested in places I can go with my kayak or wadable places (flooded timber, etc). Any advice is welcome, thanks for the help!

Yes I have and there are ducks there but it is usually very crowded. Its worth goin once. Gotta have your annual public hunting permit.

Thanks Hank. I figured it would be crowded being so close to DFW. I'll probly head down there in the near future...I hear there's great fishing so definitely a good excuse to do some off season scouting. If you don't mind, have you noticed any general areas where one might get off the beaten path (aka where john boats typically can't go)? I've got a kayak so there's a possibility I could work some makeshift ponds or creeks joining the main lake... Feel free to email!

Well, most years on those wma's you can only hunt three days out of the week normally Wed., Sat, and Sun. sometimes Mon. With that being said... When you get there on one of those days there is a check station that you check in at early in the morning and you pick or get assigned to a spot and you pretty much have to stay in that general area.  Last year we could not hunt until after the split. I got the wildlife biologist card last time I drove through there. His name is Gary Rhodes, I real nice fella, the office number for the Richland Creek WMA is 903-389-7080. Give that number a call there is always someone there and they can tell you better han I can. Also try tpwd.org and go to the wma section there is a little info on it there. Hope that helps man.

BIRDS

I was just up there in teal season and there was 15 trucks hunting this little tank (still waiting for the rest of the tanks to be filled)  When 4 o-clock came it was a mad rush to your spot, so be prepared.  This mean while waiting for 4 to come gear up and be ready, not much time to stand around when you are alowed in the unit.  Good numbers of birds and some good places if you dont mind the walk back there to them.
