It can be good, it just depends what the lease looks like and how well its been taken care of. There is some great deer hunting to be had in that area.

We've hunted south of Junction around Telegraph for about 10 years.  Deer vary in size...we've seen them from hill country minis all the way to 140 point all hangers.  There are some exotics in the area (Axis and some Aoudad), and if you're on the North Llano River (the north and south Llano rivers meet in Junction) that's definitely a plus.  The area, especially if you're on the river, is beautiful.  Fair turkey population too, and some hogs.

I have 500 acres 14 miles West of Junction on the Llano River. We see plenty of Deer and Axis, but no hogs and only a few Turkey. I don’t hunt it very much, mostly got it for my little brother and 2 cousins.  I hunted it one day last year and took a small 8 point.  My cousin and brother shot a few Does.  We had a number of nice deer on the game cameras but as soon as November hit the bucks disappeared and were only seen at night on the cameras.

how much land are you looking to Lease? How many people are you going to put on the place..  i may know the ranch owner, who is it?.

I've hunted northeast of Junction for 27 years. When the area around my place wasnt overhunted and the 25,000 acre ranch to the south of us wasnt hunted we would see 120-130 class often. Then that rnach high fenced and alot of the big ranches around were split up and sold off so the hunting pressure is much higher. With heavy management and supplimental feeding the deer can be very good but not expect South Texas body size. Between still family owned border properties and good relationships with some of our immediate neighbors we have about 2500 acres that all owners are management minded and all feeding protein. We are now starting to see really good bucks again. You are lucky since you will have a natural water source near your place so the deer wont have to go far to search for it. Good luck with whatever you set yourself into.

I hunted the old Coke Stevenson ranch (north side of 377) in Telegraph for a couple of years back in the mid 80's. It was a great lease for a couple of years but was quickly overhunted. The lease manager along with the brothers who had the grazing rights brought in day hunters every chance they could. We had a dozen deer harvested one year with 16 inch spreads or better. As I recall, there was a section right behind the ranch that had a highly ranked non-typical deer taken from it years earlier. I love the area and am hunting not too far from there this year...in Sonora.
