Coyote Question

Greetings All,

My wife & I will be moving out to some rural property soon, where we're renovating an old house.  There are a LOT of coyotes around there.  We've seen & heard hundreds over the last couple of years.  Found one dead on the road right in front of the house just last week.

My wife is a big-time cat lover, and she HATES coyotes, 'cause of their fondness for eating cats.  We also have chickens and geese that we need to defend.  I have several rifles that I could use just fine on the coyotes, including .223's, 7.62x39's, and my .30-30.  The problem is/was that my wife really can't stand much recoil or muzzle blast at all.  Even the .223 intimidates her to the point that she won't shoot it, but she really wanted to be able to pop a coyote if one comes around when I'm not there.

Since any shot she'd be taking at a coyote would be likely to be at pretty short range (probably 50 yards or less), I reasoned that a carbine shooting a pistol round might be a good choice for a very gentle-to-shoot gun with reasonable power for a coyote at short range.  I got her a Hi-Point semiauto carbine in .40 S&W and fitted it with a red-dot scope.

Any thoughts on this setup?  Thanks in advance.

Regards,

Jim
