Slickhead bit the dust last evening. This brings me and my buddy's total to 2 does, 1 buck (146 4/8") and 3 pigs (1 lost due to darkness). This has been a productive year but we have put in a big effort. Last year was a banner year and we were done before Thanksgiving. He still has a doe tag and I still need a buck. But with meat in the freezer, I can be very selective or just wait until next year. I may wait until the last week or so of the season when the pressure goes down. We'll see what happens.

dont forget about muzzle loader season!!!!! friday evening had a doe come zooming by at 30 yards, tried to get on her but it was too thick.then i looked back and there was another one standing there so i moved to get on it and saw that it had horns coulndt tell what all it had, to small anyway. may have seen a spike on one side??? but already have my buck. so, anyway about 2 minutes later these 3 dogs come out in the same place. i was maaaddddddd. they all three had the same red collar on so i let them all walk off. i thought someone may have been out just walking aroundwith their dogs. but right at dark,( there was a guy hunting down the road where i wanted to hunt but let him have it to his self and went 1/2 mile down)he cut loose with 2 shots and i heard one off the dogs yelping, so he didnt let them just walk off, (good man in my opinion)
isnt there a leash law for dogs in the forrest?????

We asked the GW about shootings dogs running deer. He said he could not say it was OK to do. He did qualify that with there would be nothing he could do about if we did. Years ago on a small lease we had there was a group of 20 or so dogs that would run the deer. Some were leashed others were not. 3 rounds of #4 3 inch magnum buckshot at 30 yards and we had no more dogs running deer. Keep dogs leashed in the forest. We had 2 dogs run a nice buck off my buddy was going to shoot. They got lucky when he cut a few hairs off of one of them with the broadhead.

So there are wild dogs running around in the SMNF or are they people's trained dogs used for hunting? I don't get it, I do some duck hunting there from time to time and want to make sure it's safe to bring my dog in there.

No problem bringing your dog for retrieving. But be sure you can control him so does not get away from you and run off for any reason.

I hunt quail and snipe in the forest and often time my dog is way out ahead of me. If anyone shoots my dog that has a very visible collar on, chances are you won't be making it out of the forest yourself. Strays are one thing, but a dog with a collar needs to be left alone.

Wow thats pretty hostile of you to say. Frankly people like you scare me during deer season. You deserve to have your dog shot for being dumb enough to not have him on a leash during deer season....

E.TX Bowhunter, You guys are good! I've been hunting there 3 years now and this year ive hunted the hardest, i had one great opportunity on a buck but blotched it. Thats the first buck ive seen while actually sitting in my stand. Any tips/hints would be appreciated. I saw a bunch of deer the second weeked of the season but last week i didnt see a dang thing hunting in the same area. Seems like the deer are either fully nocturnal or extremely skiddish, i imagine both.....

rrf I would not be in the SHNF during the rifle season myself. much less with a dog. Lots of "city slicker want-aabees" Not safe for man or dog in my opinion. I use to hog hunt with dogs in the forest. Before they went and banned it. There was a legal season for it. Not during dear season. Any one who runs dogs during the dear season is an idiot and is inconsiderate of other fellow outdoorsmen. So I guess instead of dealing with the law breakers. they penalized folks like me who obeyed the laws and rules and banned it all together. I would join the Texas dog hunters Assoc. etc your type of dog hunting might be next.

First off I am a Texas resident and hunter, I buy the hunting liscense and the public hunting permit like everyone else and I read the rule book about what the seasons are and what you can do. "There was a legal season for it. Not during dear season. Any one who runs dogs during the dear season is an idiot and is inconsiderate of other fellow outdoorsmen. So I guess instead of dealing with the law breakers."In San Jacinto County the dates for Squirrel Hunting are "Open Season: October 1, 2010-February 6, 2011 and May 1-31. Daily Bag Limit: 10."Thats copyied straight from TPWD.
Also for Sam Houston Forrest Unit # 905 ther are no restrictions for using a dog for squirrel only for hog or deer.http://www.tpwd.state.tx.us/huntwild/hunt/public/lands/table_contents/media/pwd_bk_w7000_0112a_132.pdf this is the link for the page.
We asked the GW about shootings dogs running deer. He said he could not say it was OK to do. He did qualify that with there would be nothing he could do about if we did.
There was a squirrel dog shot by a deer hunter 3 years ago in the Sam Houston National Forrest and the man was taken to jail and recieved a large fine and then had a cival case also.
I have alot of money invested in my dogs and work very hard training and caring for them, I try and not turn out were anyone is around but at times it does happen that we end up by other hunters and I try and leave as soon as I find this out, but I have as much right to hunt public land as the deer hunters.
I hunt quail and snipe in the forest and often time my dog is way out ahead of me. If anyone shoots my dog that has a very visible collar on, chances are you won't be making it out of the forest yourself. Strays are one thing, but a dog with a collar needs to be left alone.
I would half to agree with this 100%

this guy is way out of line . your dead wrong about not being able to hunt your dogs when the season is in. talking about no respect for fellow hunters this guy takes the cake. the hunting laws were not wrote just for u and ur deer hunting pleasure there for all of us glade your not in austin. for any of ur readers to ( not good or correact advise about killing a dog there are laws to protect all of the hunters rights including there dogs just like anyother hunter.) not just bow hunters i guess u would want to shoot a hole in my boat if i were sking with my grandkids in the same lake ur fishing in . we take a lot of kids hunting and this is not the kind of values we would want them to learn. squirrel hunting with dogs is a great way to teach them about hunting and conservation alot of kids dont have the patience to set for long periods of time and this is a good way to interduce them to hunting (((( might i ask when if ever have u took a kid on the bow stand with u))))) ooooo ur to worried about killing a big BUCK and everyone should hunt like uuuuu

Man can you guys not read? I am talking about dogs running deer. Not squirrel dogs or retrievers. If your bird or squirrel dog wants to run away and chase deer because you have not trained him properly, I will assume that you will plead guilty to using dogs to run deer. This is an illegal activity. How do you control your dog? Whistle or shock collar? Both of which will give another hunter notice that the dog is not a stray, a dumped animal, or just wild. It is up to you to control your animal. Now a pack of dogs is a meanace.

I'm giving you advice. But I have doubts about your ability to read but I will try again:
If you let your dog run loose and someone shoots it, the GW may not do anything so you need to control him. (This is what he said to me) There are a lot more people in the woods and many of them will shoot anything that moves. If you care for your dog it is your reponsibility and yours only. Calling hunters names when they are trying to help you makes it appear that you are not a hunter at all and mearly a PETA plant trying to stir things up on our hunting sites. In the words of Paul Harvey " GOOD DAY"

"I'm giving you advice"
I did not ask for any advice nor do I feel that you are qualified to give any advice.
If you let your dog run loose and someone shoots it, the GW may not do anything so you need to control him. (This is what he said to me)
This is terrible advice!!!!! Give the game wardens name that told you this, I know beyond a shadow of a doubt that if someone shoots my dog they will be going to jail if they make it out of the hospital.
You seem to be one of the people that "Shoot anything that moves." if you go back and read your comments about shooting dogs.
The only reason I posted to this thread is I live and hunt in the SHNF and I will tell you there is no wild packs of dogs chasing the deer so take some real advice and DONT SHOOT ANY DOGS.
a PETA plant trying to stir things up on our hunting sites. Your right I didn't have to call you an Idiot ...
