Introduction to Bird Hunting?

Hi, I am interested in learning about bird hunting.  I have never had any exposure to it, but I have always liked sporting dogs.  I was thinking about getting a dog and maybe getting involved in field trials and dog shows.  I have been researching the english pointer breed and am impressed.  However, as stated above, I don't know the first thing about bird hunting or how to train a pointer.  And before I would get a dog, I'd like to go on a bird hunt as an observer to see if it is something I really want to devote my time to.  I'd like to see if I would enjoy it enough to dedicate myself.  Is there anywhere in Texas that would provide me with such an opportunity?  I don't know anyone personally who bird hunts and could take me.  I was hoping to find somewhere that would allow me to go simply as an observer to check the sport out.  I live in Paris, Texas.  This is about 2 1/2 hours from Dallas.

I'm real familiar with the Paris, TX area (my wife's family is from near there).  There are several game ranches and/or preserves in the area - you might talk to them and see if they'd let you come along with them.  I don't know anything about these guys, but here are some suggestions:

Pintail Farms - Honey Grove, TX

LoJo Ranch - Honey Grove

I'm a bird hunter and own and trained my own dog.  Be careful, it is a huge commitment and would be a total waste if you weren't able to follow through.    Good luck
