ANTLERS

Yesterday was a spectacular day at Aquilla, didn't get a shot but seems like all the wildlife was active.

The duck hunters sounded like they had a war going on for most of the day, there were even ducks on some of the small tanks in the wooded areas away from the main lake.

Early in the morning at first light, I watched to good size Coyotes playing around on a large brushy field, bouncing like a couple of rabbits.

Had 3 doe come running past me like scalded dogs when I was set up down by the lake.

On the way back to meet up with my hunting buddy, jumped a buck that was lying down in a blowdown, he was about 5 yards off the grown over road I was walking on.  Of course, when he got up, he kept the blowdown between him and me, could only see his rack and only non-vital body parts as he got outta there.

Met up with my buddy and took him to another area that I thought would be worthwhile, it's a small patch of woods that's a perfect funnel area.  While we were standing there, I looked out onto a short cut grassy field and was shocked.  It was 10:30 in the morning and there we 3 doe out there eating, they were never in a hurry to leave the field either. We watched them till they left the field then went near the area, found the deer bedded in a small depression near an old stock tank.  We backed out and my buddy went back later in the day and set up to watch the area until dusk hoping that a buck would show up.  He saw a total of 5 deer come into the tank but no buck.

When we left the area at 11:45 to walk back to the truck to eat some lunch, we came up out of a dry creek bed towards a fenceline.  There on a clear cut road stood a beautiful Rio Grande gobbler and me with a .50 cal Optima in my hands.  He went down the road like a race horse until he got some distance then went airborne and sailed away.

Talked to several hunter that day, seems like everyone was seeming deer, one said he had seen 5 different bucks chasing doe and that they'd been at it all morning.

All in all it was a great day to be in the woods, makes me wish I could have went back today.

Hey Ski, that sounds good, I'm off or nine days starting Saturday and will hopefull be headed to Aquilla for a day or two. I want to try and fill my West of I-35 one buck county tag.  I have plans to go to DCNF on Monday the 15th and then to Aquilla. So it sounds like I need to take my Shotgun, decoys and steel shot also. Can you give me an area to start off looking for deer sign. Im not expecting any of your hot spots just a begining area that I can start scouting. I think I may do a lot of walking and rattling because I personally think the Major Rut is on at this time of the year.  It sounds like your friend saw evidence that the rut is on. This part of the rut is better to me because the number of doe in heat this time around is much fewer and this causes the buck to really compete.I had a great hunt last weekend, there is a long post all about the hunt. In short I rattled up a nice 10pt. Are you by chance going to be hunting Aquilla anytime next week?

I think it will last thru this weekend at least.  Where are you hunting in the Del Rio Area? I used to have a 3000ac lease that boarder the State land around Lake Amistad, killed my 3 biggest buck there. It is a nice 9pt with 9" G2s and 7" G3s. Also saw a Mountain Lion once, took a shot but missed. This was back in 1981 when I was in High School. Good Luck this weekend. I'm gonna head back to either Aquilla WMA or DCNF for some deer hunting as I will be off for 9 days.

When you purchase your hunting license next year, also purchase a APHP to go along with it.  A few days after your purchase, the TPWD will send you a Public Hunting Lands Map Booklet that will give you general info about all available public lands in Texas. Then it's just read and go out and explore the areas that catch your eye.
