Yesterday was a spectacular day at Aquilla, didn't get a shot but seems like all the wildlife was active.
The duck hunters sounded like they had a war going on for most of the day, there were even ducks on some of the small tanks in the wooded areas away from the main lake.
Early in the morning at first light, I watched to good size Coyotes playing around on a large brushy field, bouncing like a couple of rabbits.
Had 3 doe come running past me like scalded dogs when I was set up down by the lake.
On the way back to meet up with my hunting buddy, jumped a buck that was lying down in a blowdown, he was about 5 yards off the grown over road I was walking on. Of course, when he got up, he kept the blowdown between him and me, could only see his rack and only non-vital body parts as he got outta there.
Met up with my buddy and took him to another area that I thought would be worthwhile, it's a small patch of woods that's a perfect funnel area. While we were standing there, I looked out onto a short cut grassy field and was shocked. It was 10:30 in the morning and there we 3 doe out there eating, they were never in a hurry to leave the field either. We watched them till they left the field then went near the area, found the deer bedded in a small depression near an old stock tank. We backed out and my buddy went back later in the day and set up to watch the area until dusk hoping that a buck would show up. He saw a total of 5 deer come into the tank but no buck.
When we left the area at 11:45 to walk back to the truck to eat some lunch, we came up out of a dry creek bed towards a fenceline. There on a clear cut road stood a beautiful Rio Grande gobbler and me with a .50 cal Optima in my hands. He went down the road like a race horse until he got some distance then went airborne and sailed away.
Talked to several hunter that day, seems like everyone was seeming deer, one said he had seen 5 different bucks chasing doe and that they'd been at it all morning.
All in all it was a great day to be in the woods, makes me wish I could have went back today.
