It finally cooled down October 30, 2005. The morning started with a very nice 8 pointer working a scrape and walking by at about 50 yards. I knew it was a good start. But, this is hunting. It took 2 hours before I saw anything else. I watched down a trail to see feet coming my direction. Then a chest and horns. it was a small 6 point 1 and 1/2 years old. I waited for something to follow him. Right on que another set of feet appeared. This time there was a huge 8 pointer trailing. I had time to get positioned for a shot. The small 6 stopped 10 yards away and did not clear the brush. The 8 stopped on the other side of the 6 at 12 yards. I watched the 8 look very cautiously in the direction the earlier 8 pointer had come from. He let out a snort-wheeze. This was neat from 12 yards. It's not real pretty. He started checking the air for a hot doe. After 10 minutes the two buck circled around my tree stand. I had to turn all the way around the tree and draw. I don't know which was louder, my heart or their footsteps on the dry leaves. I waited for them to clear the tree. Neither did. They were walking directly away behind the tree. I had snatched defeat from the jaws of victory again. I sat for another hour knowing the day was over. Just then I caught movement coming my way. I saw a body with nice horns duck under a bush. I drew expecting him to be right in front of me. He crossed at 8 yards and the arrow found the front right shoulder. The buck took off for aout 50 yards. He ran into a large youpon bush and cartwheeled to the ground. They day and the season were over.

I still after all these years cannot believe how fast luck changes in hunting. Guess that's what keeps us going to make another trip. Good luck only takes a few seconds in a week's or a month's time. 'Till next time. Good Luck!

Yep, archery hunting is an exciting business!!  Can't tell you how many times "I've snatched Defeat from the jaws of Victory" like you said.  The number of times I've been within 20 yds of a bull elk and never get a shot off amazes me.  Some of my rifle hunting buddies just can't believe you can be that close and never even get the shot.  When I tell them about the time my six year old daughter reached out and grabbed a calf elk by the leg, they nearly fall out of their chair in disbelief.  Any number of them have asked her about it the next time they see her.  I know that they're really testing to see if the story is true.  Sure enough, she goes on and on about how Daddy got mad and told her "Never, ever do that again.  You can get hurt real bad doing things like that."
