Texas offers a wide range of hunting opportunities including alligator, dove, goose, pheasant, mule deer, pronghorn antelope and white-tailed deer. There are hundreds of locations across the state, in addition to the Texas Parks and Wildlife locations, where licenses of all types are available for purchase to legally hunt in Texas.

Here a list of my favourite places to go hunt.

Hueco Tanks State Historic Site

Hueco Tanks offers a variety of outdoor activies, most notably camping and rock climbing. However, one of the biggest draws to this historic site are the prehistoric pictographs that dot the cave walls there. Visitors and campers must make reservations at least two days prior to visiting. Pictograph tours are also avaible by advanced request.

As both the state capital and the home of the main campus of the University of Texas, Austin possesses an air of erudition and sophistication unusual for a city of just over 550,000 people.

Padre Island National Seashore stretches from Corpus Christi south some 75 miles to the Port Mansfield Cut - offering some of the most remote seashore to be found anywhere. Semi-primitive campsites are available at Malaquite Beach and provide toilets, rinse-only showers, and picnic tables. Primitive camping with no facilities is available at both North and South Beach.

Devil's River State Natural Area
Located just north of Del Rio on Texas' famed Devil's River, the Devil's River State Natural Area offers a variety of outdoor activities in a remote setting. Canoeing, kayaking, mountain biking, hiking, fishing and swimming are just few of the many activities available.

We could make a heck of a forum post out of this with everyone listing their favorite places. I too love Padre, but for a great nature trail my personal favorite are the trails at Palmetto State Park, through the Ottine Swamp. The trails are marked and different flora is identified making it a learning experience for kids that is for more interesting than a book.

Another of my favorites is Pedernales Falls.
