Back in '01, I was living in Kansas due to a job change. A woman that worked for me introduced me to her husband, Bill, because he was bitten by the hunting bug almost as bad as I was.

Anyway, Bill and I hunted for Deer, Quail and Pheasants every chance we got, but Bill had never been much of a waterfowl hunter, and had never hunted geese. I talked Bill into giving goose hunting a try, but we had a problem, neither of us had a place to hunt for them.

One day while I was out driving around, I noticed large numbers of Canada Geese moving in and out of a sod farm that was just outside of town. We are talking about the suburbs of Kansas City. I went and got Bill, and we watched these birds move in and out for quite a while, and then just went to the sod farm, and knocked on the door. The owner of the sod farm was happy to let us get in there and hunt the geese.

That first saturday morning, we got our kids, and headed to the sod farm. We set up in an area we knew they were hitting and they came in like clockwork. It was over pretty quickly, but man we had fun. Especially since we had the spot for free! We hunted that sod farm the entire season, and never hurt for birds.

Just goes to show you that it never hurts to ask. The worst they can do is say no.

Wow.  That's cool.  I'm going to start asking around more often!

We should put a group hunt together, primarily so we can sit at a campfire and exchange hunting stories.

That's the way I remember it also. My dad and I would drive up to a ranch house and ask if we could hunt. It was yes or no, most of the time it was yes. Seems those days are gone.
