The Congressional Sportsmen's Foundation (CSF) briefed members of Congress yesterday on two simultaneous disasters impacting recreational fishing caused by the effects of the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico and the total closure of substantial ocean fisheries by the National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).

Gulf Coast Joint Venture (GCJV) scientists recently completed analyses demonstrating that the massive losses of coastal wetlands during the past half-century have reduced the capacity of Gulf Coast marshes to support wintering waterfowl. Potential impacts of the Deepwater Horizon oil spill to marsh vegetation and food production mean waterfowl may encounter even greater food shortages when they arrive on the Gulf Coast later this year.

The voice of America's sportsmen and women will be shared with Congress in regards to the Deepwater Horizon oil spill's impact on the Gulf Coast. Thursday, the House of Representatives Natural Resources Committee, Subcommittee on Insular Affairs, Oceans and Wildlife, led by Del. Madeleine Z. Bordallo of Guam, will hold an oversight hearing on "Our Natural Resources at Risk: The Short and Long Term Impacts of the Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill."

The impacts of the growing oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico has still not fully become evident, but the potential implications to the region known for its abundant and diverse fish and wildlife could be devastating, reports the Wildlife Management Institute.

The Chairman of the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, Representative James Oberstar (MN), along with Representatives John Dingell and Vern Ehlers (MI), introduced legislation on April 21 that attempts to restore protection under the Clean Water Act (CWA) for geographically isolated wetlands and intermittent ephemeral streams.

As an oil sheen sits just over two miles offshore, workers in Port Fourchon, Louisiana loaded their latest creation, a four-story, 200-ton containment vessel onto a barge enroute to the ruptured wellhead currently gushing 200,000 gallons of crude oil into the Gulf of Mexico every day as it has since the Deepwater Horizon blew out, burned and sank.
