Summary:
You are right in that most of the ones that we see down here are gray. However, doing the breeding season, they for some reason look ochre (reddish). Here is what the encylcopedia says, "Adults are gray overall; during breeding, the plumage is usually much worn and stained, particularly in the migratory populations, and looks nearly ochre. " I may be wrong about the smaller bird being immature. It may simply be a female. Attached is a picture from the encyclopedia showing a mother and chick with reddish tones also. There are six different subspecies and this may also account for the different colors. |
