Hunting the Texas Hill Country

Hunting the Texas Hill Country
Summary:       Once again I have been blessed with the wonderful opportunity of spending opening weekend of the 2011 deer season in Texas Hill Country paradise.  I am always communicating my passion for the outdoors with others and sharing my ideas on conservation and such.  One day I came across one of the...

Ducks, Dogs, and Jerk Lines

Ducks, Dogs, and Jerk Lines
Summary: Ducks, Dogs, and Jerk Lines By:   W. S. Allen The all but undetectable coffee scented steam rose to a height of just a few inches until some silent force dispersed it to the wind.   The steam sensing it’s emanate demise throws caution to the wind as it preformed a seductive ballo...

Turkey 2011

Turkey 2011
Summary:   Spring Turkey Season! It’s like Hunter’s New Year!   Getting the drop on some spring thunder chickens after winter’s thaw is how many hunters across the country ring in their New Year in the outdoors.   It gets a hunter’s blood pumping again; out there in the crisp, cool mornings. Of course it...

Puppy Days

Summary:   Your dog would die for you. You would not do the same for him -Quote from my good friend CB I swore I’d never have another dog. Forget the bird dog, German Shorthaired Pointer thing. Just no dog. Not after Nikko. And that was almost twenty years ago. Even though every year the girls alwa...

Wetland Project Benefits Not Only the Wildlife

Wetland Project Benefits Not Only the Wildlife
Summary:

The sun was just beginning to break over the eastern horizon, a welcome sight to Jacob Sands and myself as we huddled low in the marsh grass, waiting for legal shooting light. The temperature was in the low twenties and a brisk northwest wind made it seem colder. Whistling wings could be heard overhead as teal, pintail, mallards and an assortment of diving ducks stirred from their night’s rest on the water. Across the wetland, the sound of a big flock of geese, a mixture of snows, white front and Canada’s could be heard as the big birds stirred and took flight from their night’s roost and headed to a distant field to feed. The day was coming to life and legal shooting time was seconds away.

Winter Redfishing in Fresh Water

Winter Redfishing in Fresh Water
Summary:

A mature redfish is built like a torpedo with a boat paddle tail. A brute of a fish, a mature or ‘Bull Red’ as the big females are called, is one of the hardest fighting fish in salt water and beyond question, the hardest fighting of all fish in freshwater. Granted, redfish (red drum) are not native to freshwater lakes but several years ago, Texas Parks and Wildlife began an aggressive stocking program on a few power plant freshwater reservoirs in Texas. The top two largest freshwater redfish in the state came from Fairfield and, after fishing the lake yesterday with guide Cory Vinson and my friend outdoors writer Bob Hood, I can testify that the big fish are on a good bite.

Late Season Ducks a Challenge

Late Season Ducks a Challenge
Summary:

This morning, I was sharing the blind with a great wingshot who I had watched on many previous hunts make some astounding shots.  Between the two of us, we strapped a total of 4 ducks today. Granted, we both missed a couple of shots that should have been made, but that always seems to be the case. The morning was foggy with just enough wind to keep the decoys moving, pretty close to perfect conditions for duck hunting. They were plenty of birds in the air, especially within the first hour of shooting time.

My Most Embarassing Hunting Moment

Summary: A number of years ago I used to get asked by a vendor to their hunting lease north of Fairfield, TX on the Trinity River.  The ranch was 10,000 acres in size, located near a place called Amerada Camp...probably one of the best ranches I've ever hunted.  Some of the biggest bucks I've seen in ETX ca...

Christmas Gifts for the Hunter or Fisherman
Summary:

Christmas is just around the corner and it’s time to give some thought to gifts for the hunters or fishermen on your Christmas Shopping list. If you’ve taken a look at a catalog from one of the major retail stores catering to outdoor types, you won’t have any problem finding ‘a’ gift. Let’s spend a little time and decide what might be ‘the’ perfect gift.
