not illegal, you can shoot any non-game or non-native species at night, for example, coyote, bobcat, hog, axis, fallow, sika, any ram other than Desert Big Horn (which has other restrictions also.)

You can not shoot animals like whitetail, pronghorn, mule, turkey, dove, quail, duck, geese at night.

I am a avid hunter and recently retired  Marine after 20 years of service in the infantry and I think that is probably the most unsportsmanship like act I have ever seen. The deer had no chance, you might as well go and hunt a zoo.There are things you just dont do as a sportsman, ie. shoot waterfowl on the water, snag fish etc. He shot 1 deer, what is the fate of the other deer. I would be courious as to how he unhooked the deer without injuring the other deer. Individuals like this man give hunters a bad name.
