HAPPY

We are stationed at Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio. We would like the opp. to hunt the area. BUT< here lies the problem. WE do not have the money to pay for these hunts. We would like to find someone with some land that will allow us to come hunt. We will even help out if we have to. My little bro is in GA/LA and would like to take him with me/us. I have heard that there are some farmers that would not mind if you hunt there property but it takes someone knowing someone to get this to happen. I have hunted since I was a young person and killed 3 when I was back home in Ga in 2005. I am in it for the meat not the actual sport of it...although it is quite fun.

so let me know if anyone would like to let me in. I can skin my own deer, gut my own deer cut up my own deer..cook then savor.. mmmm good stuff..

Vanessa,

Its not all that easy finding a place to hunt in Texas as 90+% is privately owned and public land has a fair amount of hunting pressure on it.  We don't own any land of our own and don't have the opportunity to ask anyone to come with us as we don't have a lease and are essentially invited to hunt every year.  And while we'd like to hunt more this is what we can afford.  There are several opportunities to hunt in Texas apart from owning or leasing...first is drawings through the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, click here to find out more.  You'll also have to get a hunting license, click here, which means you'll have to have completed a Hunter's Safety Course to qualify.  Second, certain military bases allow hunting on them with a couple in your area, like Camp Bullis.  I know there are others...maybe the other guys here can help.

If you want to pursue these options time is running out pretty quickly.  Hope this helps.

being in the military you have lots of oppurtunities to hunt gov land.  go through the sportsman center and they will square you away.  BTW ft hood has lots of places offered to the military and public.  All you will need is hunters ed and 50 dollars for military and 100 for civilian.  They will give you a map of the hunting area.  Its very easy.  You have any questions email me and i will do what i can to help you out at ft hood.

Vanessa,

Please don't misunderstand me...I brought up the hunting license more because of the cost.  If you've been in Texas more than 6 months you can probably qualify as a resident, which makes a BIG difference as resident licenses go for $25 and non-resident $315.  In my experience rules change from state to state on Hunters Safety.  However, one thing I didn't bring-up was that in Texas if you were born before September 2, 1971 you don't need it.  But, since you already have a card it doesn't matter.

that last post of yours comes across a little crappy i hope maybe im reading to much into the attitude youve got most people on this site are looking for hunting spots right now as well. you might not want to slam the people of texas if your looking for places to go hunt for free.

I agree mojo.  Another thing to understand is that a lot of large landowners in Texas are ranchers with cattle.  They don't just let anyone hunt their land because they have to protect their investment.  As far as your comments about Texas, you are way off.  Heck just ask Michael Waddell, hes a Georgia boy and I've seen a lot of videos of him hunting in Texas.

fort hood is a bit far from san antonio? I appologize if it seems i had additude. was not meant to sound that way. and the way that the regulations read is military is free for texas and i went by sporting goods store and talked to them as well on the permits that i need. . and I have become a state resident any way so I should not pose a problem.  where i live in sa are alot of deer that rome behind my house but i am not sure as to who owns the land. seems as though it has been cut to build in the future and from walking my dogs back there the deer are in good size. but i am not one for hunting on peoples property with out permission. the area is huge and there is noone living on it from fm 78 all the way to I10.  i have been back there several times. I have a beagle and she likes to have her space from time to time to run. I take her back there so as she can chase the rabbits and play. she is used to having 10 acers to play on and not be fenced in. she chased several big deer the other day and it took me an hour to track her to get her back. we have been looking into purchasing land and home mostly the land so that we can take her to the country to let her have freedom. and give us a place to camp and have friends out for pig picking (bbq). so thank you all for your imput. i am thinking i may rome out toward bandera, hondo, uvalde, or castroville over the next few weeks and maybe check out some of the hot spots for hunting equip. and talk to people. if I do not find some sort of work soon i will be moving back to GA to get a job that pays good and will not have to worry about it. the hubby is the solider and is deploying in feb for a year and will not be here anyway after that.  but thanks any ways y'all.

but he has money!? he is not a soldier in the military taking care of 2 familys trying to make ends meet. my friends husband shot himself in the head and she and her daughter are living with us and she can not work due to back injury so she gets 500 for ss. but that does not help much. so 3 adults and 2 kids ... i have alot of skills and still can not get a job that will pay more than 8 an hour. and with my experince thats like crapping on a resume. so yeah if i had the money to spend to do a hunt i would gladly pay for it.
